Independence Day
Independence Day

Independence Day, commonly referred to as the Fourth of July, is an American holiday commemorating the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. The federal holiday dates back to the 18th century American Revolution when in June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies voted to declare independence.

Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May to honor the men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice and died while serving in the United States military. It dates back to America’s bloodiest war, the civil war, which claimed over 600,000 lives.

It was the efforts of President Harry S. Truman that led to the establishment of Armed Forces Day, a single holiday where citizens can come together to thank our military for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America.

Prior to August 31, 1949, when Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day, there were separate appreciation days for the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines. This single day celebration released when the Department of Defense unified with Armed Forces under its wing.
