STEM Education: Empowering our Future Generation of Science and Engineering Professionals
March 10, 2017
As a company that thrives on innovation and technology, Cubic is committed to promoting STEM education for children because it’s critical to provide the resources to inspire the next generation of scientists, innovators and engineers. In an effort to raise awareness on the importance of the sciences and technology, individuals and corporations are increasing their involvement in coding competitions, science fairs and investing in providing resources for classrooms.
The reason is simple, jobs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) play a very important role in the growth of the U.S. economy. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, STEM occupations are growing at 17 percent, while other occupations are growing at 9.8 percent. Therefore, it’s important to promote STEM education for kids age K-12 because STEM professions will continue to drive the future of global innovation.
Every year, Cubic participates in a number of different STEM-related events to help raise awareness and get kids excited about science and innovation. Most recently, Cubic was involved in EXPO Day, part of the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering that celebrates science in the local community. Cubic along with a number of local businesses, corporations and nonprofits exhibited at EXPO Day with interactive and hands-on activities to showcase technological capabilities in the real world. Families attending EXPO Day had the opportunity to test out Cubic’s Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES), robotic arms, facial recognition gates and Bandit Board at Cubic’s booth.
In addition to EXPO Day, Cubic is proud to sponsor Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) for the fourth year. TARC is the world’s largest annual student rocket contest organized by the Aerospace Industries Association with a mission to build a stronger U.S. workforce in STEM. Teams, ranging from middle and high school students, across the nation compete for the chance to participate in the national finals held in France. This year is the 15th anniversary of the contest and 5,000 middle and high school students have registered for the contest.
Whether sponsoring and participating in events or offering mentorship programs to students, Cubic is proud to invest in our younger generation who once exposed to STEM could become the next influential leaders, technology evangelists and innovators of our generation.
