| The
Combat
Maneuver Training Center - Instrumentation System (CMTC-IS)
was developed by Cubic for the Seventh Army Training
Command in Hohenfels, Germany. Fielded in October 1993, CMTC
was the world's first turnkey CTC-IS and the most advanced
of its kind.
The system,
which supports up to 1,100 soldiers and vehicles, was the
first GPS-based ground combat training system. It was also
the first CTC to integrate Distributed Interactive Simulation
(DIS) and the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System
(MILES) into training exercises.
Using
GPS technology, CMTC-IS tracks the position, action and movement
of each participant. Information from battlefield action,
including hits and kills, is fed through a data link to a
central computer facility. Battle analysts then monitor the
data and graphic depictions, and select key events for after-action
reviews in field mobile facilities or in a central theater.
Strengths
and weaknesses of the participating units can be identified
and discussed in detail, and improvements can be enacted.
The success
of CMTC launched Cubic into a new product line that led to other
major awards in the mid-1990s, including the Joint
Readiness Training Center- IS (JRTC-IS) and the UK's Area
Weapons Effects Simulator (AWES).
