Northern Rail Ticket Issuing System

Transactions at Point of Sale
SAN DIEGO,
CALIF. AND LONDON, ENGLAND, June 20, 2006 – Cubic
Transportation Systems Limited, a subsidiary of San Diego,
California-based Cubic Corporation (AMEX:CUB), has received
a contract from Northern Rail Ltd.,UK, for more than £2.3
million (U.S. $4 million) for the supply, installation and
maintenance of its next-generation ticket issuing system.
The largest train operating company of the privatized rail
network, Northern Rail operates services across all of northern
England.
The new
system, known as FasTIS, will replace Northern Rail’s
APTIS system, also a Cubic system, which has been the workhorse
for the rail industry in the UK for almost 20 years. Northern
Rail will install and integrate 236 new FasTIS units at its
153 staffed stations as well as at its two training academies.
“The award of this contract is an important development
as it furthers Cubic’s leading position in the UK ticketing
business,” said Nigel Bryant, Cubic’s Managing
Director in the UK.
Designed to provide a state-of-the-art ticket issuing system
for use in rail booking offices, FasTIS provides streamlined
ticket issuing while reducing wait times and long passenger
lines at the point of sale. The user-friendly interface and
ease of operation are central features of the new system
which helps operators improve productivity and reduce rail
retail costs.
FasTIS
was also designed for use with Cubic’s contactless
reader module used in London’s Oyster® ticketing
system, which allows it to be interoperable with the Oyster
