Cubic wins new contract to support
Michigan Air National Guard training
Company’s role may expand to integrating future
EW training technology
SAN DIEGO,
Calif. – Jan. 31, 2006 – The
defense segment of Cubic Corporation (AMEX: CUB) has received
a five-year
contract from the Air Education and Training Command (AETC)
at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, to continue and expand
the technical support that it provides to the Air National
Guard Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC) at Alpena,
Michigan.
Under
the new contract, Cubic’s expanded responsibilities
will allow the company to play a key role in assisting in
the integration of important future subsystems into the Cubic-developed
Alpena Kadena Interim Training System (AKITS), the first
rangeless air combat training system to be fielded in the
continental United States. Those subsystems will include
new Joint Threat Emitters as well as Cubic’s own P5
Combat Training System (P5 CTS).
Cubic has provided contractor logistic support to the Alpena
CRTC since October 1998. Cubic will continue these duties
and is now also planned to be a significant contributor to
the integration of the Joint Threat Emitters into the AKITS
system that Cubic developed and now operates and maintains.
Scheduled to be delivered to Alpena Air National Guard Center
in 2007, the threat emitters simulate ground-to-air threats
against aircraft so pilots can practice taking appropriate
countermeasures to avert or destroy the threats.
“Cubic already has a track record of integrating threat
emitters into air combat training, having integrated similar
technology into the Canadian ACMI air combat training system,
which is now being used to train Canadian aircrews at Cold
Lake and Bagotville, Ontario,” said Kevin Hayes, vice
president and general manager of the Worldwide Technical
Services Division, part of Cubic’s Mission Support
Business Unit.
Cubic’s deployable AKITS system -- in current operation
at the Alpena CRTC -- offers training without the need for
a fixed infrastructure for up to 24 tactical aircraft, including
the A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-15 Eagle.
The mobile system helps train USAF and Air National Guard
personnel participating in large-force air combat training
exercises not only at Alpena CRTC but from around the United
States – Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, North Dakota,
Oregon, Indiana, Ohio, Texas and Iowa. Cubic’s AKITS
technology has also flown in international air combat training
exercises, including Canada’s annual Maple Flag. Cubic
deploys personnel to support these exercises, along with
the AKITS system.
“Our AKITS support team has consistently exceeded
our customer’s expectations, resulting in this new
follow-on contract,” said Tom Daniels, Cubic program
manager for AKITS. “Most recently, following an Operational
Readiness Inspection of the 127th Wing at Selfridge ANG Base,
Michigan, conducted in October, the Air Combat Command Inspector
General (IG) Team recognized the excellent support provided
by the Cubic team in their outbriefing letter of appreciation
to the Alpena CRTC Commander. The Alpena CRTC Commander added
his note of appreciation on the IG letter to the AKITS team
as well.”
