Cubic Previews Future Smart Card Ticketing System
at Los Angeles Metro Orange Line Opening

SAN DIEGO, Calif., November 29, 2005– A new way to travel in the San Fernando Valley debuted on October 28 with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (Metro) dedication of the Metro Orange Line for bus rapid transit. The event included a preview of Los Angeles County's future smart card fare payment technology designed by Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corporation (AMEX:CUB).

Using their commemorative Metro "TAP" smart cards, Los Angeles Mayor and Metro Board Chairman Antonio Villaraigosa, County Supervisor and Metro Board Member Zev Yaroslavsky, and Metro CEO Roger Snoble were among the first to ride one of the County's new Metro Liners, state-of-the-art buses that ride like a train and operate on the region's first right-of-way built exclusively for bus rapid transit.

The new smart fare card, branded as TAP, which stands for Transit Access Pass, will be introduced to riders countywide upon completion of the new ticketing system in 2007. For now, new Cubic ticket vending machines at each of the 13 Orange Line stations will dispense the same one-way tickets and day passes that are currently available throughout the rest of the system. The machines are ready to function as smart card vending machines when the new smart card ticketing system is implemented.

The Metro's new Universal Fare System will link public transit througout Los Angeles County to TAP. Cubic is responsible for the design, development and system integration under an $84 million contract it received from Metro in 2002. Since then Cubic has received more orders for added scope to the original contract including a $7.45 million award in 2003 to expand the smart card system to the new Metro Orange Line and a $5.9 million contract on 2004 to provide central computer and clearinghouse integration for Metro's Regional Central Data Collection System (RCDCS). In July 2005, Cubic also received an additional $3.8 million order for the Pasadena Gold Line-East Side Extension light rail line, currently under construction.

The Cubic-provided RCDCS will perform the regional back office and clearinghouse functions needed for funds settlement and financial reconciliation and manage data for 10 municipal operator regional participants. Cubic has received $19.5 million in contracts from these Los Angeles County municipal bus operators, which include Antelope Valley Transit, Culver City Bus, Foothill Transit, Gardena Bus Lines, LADPT, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, Santa Clarita Transit and Torrance Transit, to expand and integrate their systems into the Regional TAP - Universal Fare System, further advancing the one-card system vision for the county.

Cubic is providing a full complement of systems, software and services for Metro including new rail ticket vending machines and validators, bus fareboxes, the RCDCS and point of sale devices for the regional participants Metro; Metrolink, the commuter rail line; and the county's bus operators; and maintenance of the system along with other ptoential opportunities that are emerging.

"The Metro Orange Line opening is a far-reaching milestone for L.A. County, offering the first alternative for commuter travel beyond the 101 Freeway," said Richard Efland, president and chief executive officer, Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc.. "Cubic is proud to be a participant in this invaluable new public service for regional residents and prouder still to be the provider of the new smart card fare collection and revenue management system that will usher in a new era for public transportation in Los Angeles County."

The new Metro Orange Line is the first of its kind in Southern California and includes a 14-mile exclusive busway that runs between the North Hollywood Metro Red Line Station and Warner Center in the West Valley, passing through communities including North Hollywood, Valley Glen, Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana and Woodland Hills. It is part of a broader Metro program that began in June 2000 to expand use of the successful high-capacity Metro Rapid buses throughout Los Angeles County.
