For troops deployed on the Korean peninsula, readiness is the top objective. Commanders must have confidence in their units' ability to fight. And that means Logistics. Army Logisticians rely on the Combat Service Support, Very Small Aperture Terminal, or CSS VSAT, to exchange vital information directly impacting force readiness.

The U.S. Army fielded CSS VSAT nearly 15 years ago, and the legacy terminals have not only reached the end of their service life, but weighed over 500 pounds and only operated in a commercial Ku band which could often be jammed by adversaries.

The Solution

GATR 1.2-meter Inflatable Satellite Antenna.

The U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) capitalized on the combat-tested GATR 1.2-meter Inflatable Satellite Antenna (ISA).

The ISA is a lightweight, versatile satellite terminal that offers numerous improvements over the CSS VSAT, and is far more expeditionary because it weighs approximately 150 pounds and packs into two cases. Plus, two soldiers can easily set up the ISA in less than 30 minutes, compared to more than 45 minutes for the previous system.

The ISA can also access satellites in three different frequency bands, providing soldiers with multiple communications pathways and a maintenance-free manual pointing system providing soldiers with operational flexibility and saving the Army substantial repair costs and mission delays.
