Christchurch, New Zealand, Cubic Transportation Systems (Cubic) this week welcomed New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) announcement that Motu Move, New Zealand’s National Ticketing Solution, is commencing contactless payments across Metro bus and ferry services in Greater Christchurch.
“New Zealand is rolling out an innovative national account-based ticketing system that minimises payment hassles and builds trust, making public transport the easy, everyday option. In partnership with NZTA, Cubic is launching contactless payments across Metro, so people can pay with what they already have in their pockets. This initial phase establishes a straightforward, reliable experience that encourages a shift from cars to public transport, supported by Cubic’s proven technology in cities such as New York, London, and Sydney. When we improve the customer experience, more people choose public transport over driving,” said Dino Beverakis, Vice President and General Manager, APAC, Cubic Transportation Systems.
From launch, riders can tag to pay a standard adult non-concession fare using a contactless credit or debit card, or a card in their phone or smart watch. Existing Metrocard and cash options remain available. This first stage focuses on adult fares, with more customer features and ways to pay to follow. Concession customers should continue to pay as usual until concession fares are added to Motu Move.
Contactless options will be available across a Metro network of three transport operators and more than 300 buses and ferries, bringing simpler payments to everyday trips across Greater Christchurch.
Roger Jones, NTS Programme Director at NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) says NZTA is thrilled to confirm the start date for our first stage of rolling out Motu Move in Greater Christchurch.
“Motu Move will bring new contactless ways to pay for public transport, making it easier for everyone to use public transport, including commuters, visitors to the city and casual users.”
The Christchurch launch follows a successful contactless payment trial on Route 29 between Christchurch Airport and the city. NZTA and partners will provide customer support and information to help people choose the option that best suits them as Motu Move scales.
